One of the most persistent misconceptions about posture is that it’s a static position — something you hold, like a pose. It isn’t.
Posture is dynamic. It’s a continuous negotiation between your body and gravity, modulated by your neuromuscular system in real time, moment-by-moment. You’re never truly “standing still”. Even standing “motionless,” your body is making constant micro-adjustments — shifting weight, firing antagonist and stabilizer muscles and recruiting assistant muscle patterns to recalibrate balance.
Posture is an ongoing cycle of shifting how you balance and align your body’s zones of mass to move. Posture is emphatically not a fixed position, but ranges of subtle shifting of body mass. Observing “static” posture is motion, slowed way down-which is why it’s a great place to begin retraining posture.
Retraining posture means training the quality of those cycles. How smoothly do body masses transition between positions, and how does that affect the symmetry and control of the whole body? How accurately do body masses (aka each PostureZone) return to center? How well does the whole system adapt to perturbation?
This framework is why the StrongPosture® protocol doesn’t prescribe a “correct” posture for patients to memorize. Instead, it systematically strengthens the balance, alignment, and motion components of the cycle — so the body can find its own optimal position dynamically, moment to moment.
It’s also why I’m skeptical of posture correctors, braces, and devices that lock or inhibits the motion of one body mass with respect to another. Or braces that force part of the body into a fixed position. The first Posture Principle from my book, Stand Taller Live Longer- “Your body is Designed to Move” Override motion instead of training it and the body gets weaker, not stronger. And the moment you take the device off, you’re worse than where you started.

Good posture isn’t a destination. It’s a capacity — the ability to negotiate gravity efficiently, breath by breath, step by step. Aligning each zone of postural mass to move smoothly in a chain of whole body movement so the whole system balances effectively maximizes the effectiveness of any exercise, and recruits fuller engagement of the inner core muscles…which is the key to aligned StrongPosture®.
We call this the Motion Cycle, and understanding it changes how you think about everything from exercise prescription to injury prevention.
